Finca Paraiso
Cattle & Dairy Farm
Dominican Republic

International
Opportunity - Republica Dominicana Cattle & Dairy
Farm - Approximately 1100 acres
(7,500 tareas) Located one and a half hours
from the international airport of La Romana,
in the foothills of the northeastern mountains,
fifteen miles from the north coast, in the
province of El Seybo, the finca enjoys a
microclimate favorable to the production
of year-round pasture. The
Rio Chavon, one of the most important rivers
in the country, traverses the finca. Two
tributaries of the Chavon, Chavoncito and
Arroyon, also flow through the finca. Additionally,
there are dozens of springs and small creeks,
feeding their crystalline waters into these
major arteries. The finca is more than 1,200
acres (7,500 tareas), cross-fenced into over
forty pastures, almost all of it with new
wire and live posts; and each pasture has
live water. Our vet, who has forty years
experience on farms all over the Dominican
Republic, tells us this is the best-watered
farm on the island. About half the land is
flat to gently rolling; the other half is
hilly, with none too steep to graze. The
grass grows so fast, cattle can often be
rotated back to a grazed pasture after thirty
days.
There is housing for four families of permanent workers, as well as an owner’s house, which is unfinished but livable. There is a state-of-the-art set of working corrals and chutes and a milking parlor, in concrete and steel, under a steel roof. There is a quarry of excellent road-building material on the property, which we use to maintain our roads and which is an additional source of income since none of the neighboring farms have comparable material.
We are currently running about 450 head of cattle, and plan to double that in the next three years. We are using Brahma, Brown Swiss, and Holstein crosses to produce a dual purpose animal. Most of our cows can raise a calf and be milked once a day, all on grass, with no additional feeds, except minerals. We raise and fatten our bulls to slaughter weight all on grass. We milk about seventy-five cows year-round, and we rotate cows in and out of the milk herd as needed. The sale of milk covers all our operating costs. The sale of beef is pure profit. Although we sell all our beef locally, the rising popularity of grass-fed beef in the U.S. will make it more profitable to export in the future.
Paraiso means paradise, and this is as close to paradise as you can get on this earth. There is sunshine and rain in abundance, often on the same day. Crystal clear mountain streams abound in potential hydroelectric energy as well as waterfalls and swimming holes. Trade winds keep even the hottest days in the low eighties. There are no poisonous snakes or dangerous animals of any kind. There are no taxes. And all around, there is the overwhelming greenness of the grass.
